University Students Map Uganda
Friday, May 7, 2010
En Français
Recently students at Makerere University, Uganda, participated in a “mapping your world” competition. The competition was designed to enable creation and improvement of maps of places that students know and love, as well as giving them the chance to win a prize whilst at it. Students used
Google Map Maker
, which allows you to create a map by adding or editing features to satellite images such as roads, businesses, parks, schools and more.
More than 100 students registered from a range of departments including Computer Science, Geography, Civil Engineering, and Medicine. During the month-long competition, students made over 7,000 edits and modifications to data for hospitals, gas stations, schools, businesses, government and utility offices, among others. We are pleased to announce the winner of the competition,
Michael Kakande
, whose enthusiasm and excellent knowledge of his country resulted in over 1,200 additions to Google Map Maker. Michael is a first year student in the
Faculty of Computing & Informatics Technology (FCIT)
and will walk away with a netbook.
