Google in Sub-Saharan Africa: news, stories and thoughts
Google + 4 African Languages. That’s a plus.
Monday, March 12, 2012
En Français
Easily sharing the right things with just the right people is really what Google+ is all about. But sometimes, the people you care about may not yet be active on Google+, perhaps because they don't fully understand how to sign up, create a circle or how to run a group video chat via Hangouts.
Recently, we announced that Google+ is now
available in 17 more languages
, making a total of 60 languages that Google+ supports. In Africa we are especially excited about 4 of these:
Kiswahili
,
Amharic
,
Afrikaans
&
IsiZulu
. The interface in these languages give users a unique experience that feels closer to home and makes the core features easier to understand. Whether in an internet cafe in Arusha or on mobile browser in Gauteng, this makes a real difference for many users.
For these native speakers, it’s now easier to use Google’s
new signup process
(select from language dropdown at footer), start a Hangout in IsiZulu [“Qala i-hangout”], share your favorite photos in Afrikaans [“Deel jou gunsteling foto’s”], or in Swahili, post about your weekend to only your friends and not your boss [“Jumuisha watu wengine”]. In Amharic, use the
Google input tools
Chrome extension to post in Ethiopic script. All languages will also be available on mobile browser interface starting this Friday.
We are also excited about new possibilities for language communities using Google+. For example, someone learning Kiswahili by posing text-based questions to an online forum, can move to joining a live video tutorial with a group of speakers via Hangouts, while fully immersed using the Kiswahili language interface.
So what will you add to the equation? We invite you to +1 this post below, share it to
Google Plus
, and give it a spin by changing your primary language at
www.google.com/settings/language
.

Google + 4 langues africaines.
www.google.com/settings/language
.

Be yourself on Google Trader
Thursday, February 16, 2012
En Français
Once upon a time, people would go to markets and bazaars to trade and interact with each-other face to face. Online marketplaces have changed that. More choice, faster search, but also more anonymity and less knowledge about the person on the other side.
We wanted to make G
oogle Trader a little bit more personal. So today, for the first time, we’re introducing a way for you to use
Google+
on Google Trader.
The next time you log in to your “
My Listings
” page you can choose to use your Google+ profile on Google Trader. You can then add some more information about yourself to complete your Trader profile. People will be able to see your real name and photo from Google+, together with your listings, and they’ll be able to visit your profile to find more about you before they contact you.
Using a profile on Trader is completely optional. If you prefer, your listings can remain anonymous on Trader, as they have been in the past.
Whether you live in
Kenya
,
Nigeria
,
Ghana
, or
Uganda
visit Trader now, connect to Google+ and join the growing community. You can learn more on our

Want to become a Google Student Ambassador in Sub-Saharan Africa?
Thursday, February 16, 2012
En Français
It’s that time of the year again, when we select Google Student Ambassadors (GSAs) in universities in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Last year, we launched the
Google Student Ambassador Program
in SSA and selected Ambassadors from 28 universities in 6 countries - Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Rwanda. This year is particularly exciting because, in addition to the countries where we selected ambassadors last year, we are inviting university students studying in Angola, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Tanzania to apply to the program.
The Ambassador class of 2012 has helped to bring their university communities online, by using
Google Map Maker
and uploading over 12 SSA universities to Google Maps.
Google Apps Training at Kenyatta University, Kenya
Gmail Launch at Mbarara University, Uganda
Ambassadors are student leaders on campus who make it their mission to use technology to make a difference, not only in their universities, but also in their communities.
They teach students how to use Google tools, such as
Google Apps for Education
,
Google Search for Educators
and in selected markets,
YouTube for School
to improve their daily learning experience. Over the last year, we have seen a great improvement in how university students in Africa use technology in their academics.
Are you keen? For more information on the Google Ambassador Program and other student opportunities in SSA, visit our
University Programs website
. We are now accepting applications to the program; eligible students can submit it
here
before 1st March 2012. We look forward to hearing from you!

Google
Google Apps for Education
,
Google Search for Educators
et, dans certaines régions,
YouTube for School
ici
avant le 1er mars 2012. Nous attendons de vos nouvelles avec impatience !

Street View comes to beautiful Botswana
Monday, February 6, 2012
En Français
A new African country is set to be showcased to internet users around the world as we bring
Street View
to the beautiful southern African nation of Botswana.
In the coming weeks, our Google cars will start driving around this vast country.
Images collected by our cars will be processed and carefully stitched together, a process that can take several months. They will be made available at a later date in Street View on Google Maps.
Once launched, Street View will allow users to view and navigate 360 degree street-level imagery of Botswana streets and sites.
You can check out a restaurant before arriving, make travel plans, arrange meeting points, or get a helping hand with geography homework.
Botswana businesses can also benefit from the Street View technology by embedding Google Maps directly into their site for free, helping them to promote their hotel or increase awareness of a local store or restaurant.
Our initial Street View driving in Botswana will primarily be focused on t
he major urban areas of Gaborone and Francistown. Some of the country’s stunning destinations and wildlife reserves will also be photographed, with our cars set to drive around
Chobe National Park
, Moremi Game Reserve, Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, and the Nxai salt pans.
Street View is a popular free feature of Google Maps which
we launched in 2007 and
is already available in more than 30 countries around the world. It is also available in Google Earth and on Google Maps for Mobile.
Street View has put imagery of some of the world’s most interesting and
significant destinations
online for everyone to virtually explore.
Following the launch of Street View in South Africa just before the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Botswana will become only the second African country to be on Street View.
