Celebrating Safer Internet Day across the continent

At Google, the safety of our users is a top priority. Whether it’s creating easy-to-use tools to help you manage your information online or fighting the bad guys behind the scenes, we’re constantly investing to make Google the best service you can rely on, with security and privacy features that work for you. This is why Safer Internet Day is important to us.

Since 2004, Safer Internet Day (SID) has highlighted key challenges facing online safety and how they can be addressed.

This year we did something different. Google Africa marked SID with more than 600 kids ages 14 to 17 in day-long workshops in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal. In these workshops kids discussed and formulated their own ideas on how to make the internet a safer space.

We also reached out to young Internet users to share how to be safe on the Internet. To do this we partnered with more than 20 key organisations across the continent such as: The Film and Publications board in South Africa lead the workshops for the day. Nigerian Film and Video Censors board in Nigeria, Ministry of ICT in Kenya and Ministry of Post and Telecommunications in Senegal. At the end of the day all the children presented to each other via Google Hangouts.
